چکیده

In this paper, we describe our development of a Naval air warfare decision support interface called the Response Manager using rapid prototyping and Decsion-Centered Design. Specifically, we took eight steps to ensure that our design would meet the needs of its intended users and possess a high degree of usability: 1) recruit expert informants, 2) assemble a comprehensive set of possible features to be used in the design, 3) have experts evaluate and rank these features for development priority, 4) generate alternative display concepts for several higher ranked features, 5) have experts evaluate these alternative designs through interviews and surveys, 6) generate display designs that integrate the knowledge gained from the previous steps and incorporate human factors interface design guidelines, 7) have experts evaluate these display designs through interviews and surveys, and 8) repeat steps 4-7 as resources allow.

Human Centered Decision Support for Anti-Air Warfare on Naval Platforms

In anti-air warfare (AAW), rapidly evolving situations require very fast decisions which are extremely difficult to make, especially in so-called “mixed environments” where neutral, friendly, and hostile objects are present. Thus the importance of supporting AAW decision makers increases significantly. The basis of any support system must be an ergonomically designed user interface covering all...

AppBuilder for DSSTools: an application develdpment environment for developing decision support systems in Prolog

A programming environment for developing complex decision support systems (DSSs) should support rapid prototyping and modular design, feature a flexible knowledge representation scheme and sound inference mechanisms, provide project management, and be domain-independent. We have previously developed DSSTools (Decision Support System Tools), a reusable, domain-independent, and open-ended toolkit...

An agile, user-centric approach to combat system concept design Track: HUMAN FACTORS ENGINEERING

Purpose of this paper is defining a framework for the “Warfighter-Centered Design” (WCD) of new concepts for naval combat systems. This framework explicitly takes into account the business value of WCD with respect to safety, optimal manning and reduced lifecycle costs. WCD improves safety because lack-of usability can lead to serious consequences; the analysis of the accident of USS Vincennes ...

Cognitive Modelling for Decision Support in Naval Command & Control

Traditionally, a decision support system is built to help a broad range of users in their decision making. However, there are some domains such as air traffic control, the nuclear industry, and certain military tasks, where it is critical that particular individuals make correct judgements for the safety of themselves and others. For such people, it is possible that a decision support system ta...
